Consolidate learning from the first three GREAT modules – particularly the use of the Zero Point Survey, along with principles of managing major haemorrhage and decisions around when to use the ‘Red Blanket’ procedure.
Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the management principles of traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA) including prognostic factors, the utility of chest compressions and the role of adrenaline.
Demonstrate and apply detailed knowledge of the indications, contra-indications, anatomy, procedural steps and potential complications for performing a resuscitative thoracotomy.
Develop familiarity with the GCHHS ED resuscitative thoracotomy kit.
Develop greater confidence in both being team-leader and performing a resuscitative thoracotomy safely and in a timely manner at either of Gold Coast Health hospital campuses.
1) Read & consider the five pre-readings (& ideally the four additional resources).
(Complete the pre-reading as the TCA algorithm will not be discussed in detail on the day. )
2) Complete the 2 pre-course activities at the bottom of this page.
3) Come along to the in person session and have fun!
Be prepared for bloody & messy sims, wear enclosed shoes & leave your white linen at home.
This module will involve walking between GCUH and Griffith University Gold Coast Campus.
